This week I had my socks knocked down! That, after being in the industry for over 25 years, is hard to do. I found a posting on Slashdot about a new mapping application from Google called Google. My first thought was that it was another line extension already cool Google Maps. But then I discovered I was downloadable client application. Humm. So I took the plunge. Then I lost more than 4 hours of productivity for that day. (And I will not mention it much since.) And everyone I showed it to this day ended as gaping and drooling is a new application well.GoogleEarth jumping leaps and bounds over what we used to consider mapping applications. Google takes data from the topology of GEO satellites and converts it into a wide range of mapping applications on Earth. The photographs not only nice! However, the mapping functionality of a layer on top of pretty pictures. As these screenshots can attest, the capabilities of this application are amazing! Some of the unique features of Google are: pins can be added to the page with notes about the location.

Once you have several pins, you can click and select "Instructions for this …" then "to reach this …", and receive directions driving between the two points. Then you can have Google drive from point A to point B, with the "Play Tour" button. Then drool some more, as Google Earth flies over the entire course.
Layers, layers and more layers! Want to see all the street names? Just turn on the "Roads" box verification. What about the grocery store? Just click on the box "Grocery Stores" in the Layers window. Little shopping carts are on the map. Only a small sample of what is available in the layers is: limits of the city, postal code boundaries, railways, water, coffee Houses, malls, and more! Want to see some of the buildings? Google Earth lets you see computer-generated buildings with its true shape and form of several major cities. You should see in Las Vegas!
Another great feature of the jaw drop is the ability to "tilt" of perspective. Can change their views all the way to the surface and then pan in all directions to get a sense of how things look. I could go on for several thousand words on all the features included in Google! Oh, and did I mention it's free?

There are several versions of the application, but the free version is that suits the needs of most individuals. But, costing only $ 20 less, you can add support for GPS, import spreadsheets, drawing path, and annotations. There is also a Professional version $ 400, which offers the possibility to import site plans and use of related features with the business. The art of software development at Google is on innovation that people at Google have introduced this technology and make it available worldwide Internet. Being able to go visit a place you've never been before, it may be comforting before leaving their travel plans. Or you can just see some virtual tour in exotic places. I spent more than an hour's flight around Hong Kong! Google has a very easy to use interface. And the flow of data on their servers was more faster than I would have expected for the quality of cartography is presented. (I'm on DSL.) Keep in mind that Google is high CPU! The faster the PC, the better. While Google phone can work with, I hope that the data flow are some long waits to zoom in on details.

Be forewarned! When you download and start using Google Earth, be prepared to spend some time exploring. You'll find yourself returning to it every chance you get, just to explore new areas. And be sure to email me if you see any alien spacecraft at Area 51!
